Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, is set to broaden its network by launching direct flights from Abu Dhabi to the renowned Russian resort city of Sochi, known as the “Gateway to the Black Sea.” The new route will span 1,554 miles (2,486 km) and is scheduled to commence on May 29, 2025, with services operating three times per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

The new service will depart from Abu Dhabi-Zayed International Airport (AUH) and arrive at Sochi International Airport (AER). Etihad has confirmed that the route will be operated using its fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft. Each of the 16 A320s in the fleet is configured in a two-class layout, featuring eight business class seats and 150 economy class seats, ensuring a comfortable travel experience for both leisure and business passengers.

Etihad’s expansion into Sochi is part of a broader strategy to enhance connectivity to regions known for their natural beauty and cultural heritage. Sochi, often referred to as the Russian Riviera, offers a unique blend of coastal resorts and mountainous landscapes in the Caucasus. Notably, the city gained international acclaim when it hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking both relaxation and adventure. Additionally, the new route provides easy access to the Krasnodar Krai region, an area famed for its diverse attractions ranging from beach resorts to rugged mountain terrain.

The launch of direct flights to Sochi is just one of many new routes Etihad has announced as it continues to expand its global network. In 2024 alone, the carrier added 14 new destinations, underscoring its commitment to delivering exceptional travel experiences. Upcoming routes include services to major global cities such as Atlanta, Hanoi, Hong Kong, and Taipei, as well as European capitals like Prague and Warsaw. Etihad is also extending its reach in North Africa, with new flights planned to Algiers, Tunis, and Al Alamein in 2025, and further expanding its Southeast Asia network with new connections to popular vacation spots like Chiang Mai and Krabi in Thailand, Medan on Sumatra, and Phnom Penh in Cambodia. These additions complement Etihad’s existing services to Southeast Asian favorites, including Phuket and Bangkok.

Moreover, Etihad is set to strengthen its regional footprint with the commencement of direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Nairobi, Kenya. The airline has also recently signed a codeshare agreement with Kazakhstan-based Air Astana, further enhancing its network connectivity.

Etihad’s current fleet stands at 104 aircraft, with an additional 98 on order. The future fleet comprises 20 Airbus A321LRs, 15 A350-1000s, eight Boeing 777-8s, 17 Boeing 777-9s, 20 Boeing 787-10s, and eight Boeing 787-9s, which highlights the carrier’s commitment to modern, fuel-efficient aircraft that deliver superior performance and comfort.

By launching the Abu Dhabi-Sochi route, Etihad not only broadens its international portfolio but also reinforces its commitment to connecting passengers with dynamic and emerging markets. With enhanced connectivity, increased choice, and high-quality service, Etihad continues to pave the way for memorable travel experiences across the globe.
