Europe’s most sustainable airline

Wizz Air has been recognised as Europe’s most sustainable airline based on the Sustainalytics ratings system.

Sustainalytics’ risk ratings measure how well a company proactively manages the environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues that are the most material to their business. Based on a structured, objective and transparent methodology, the Sustainalytics ESG Risk Ratings provide an assessment of the company’s ability to mitigate risks and capitalise on opportunities.

Wizz Air has significantly improved its sustainability rating over the past year and now has the best among European airlines.

This improvement is the result of Wizz Air’s conscious attention to sustainability. Not only does Wizz Air have the lowest environmental footprint on the continent per passenger kilometre, it remained financially stable even during the past 24 months, welcomed over 30 brand new aircraft to its modern fleet, and was the first airline to reinstate pilot and cabin crew salaries to pre-pandemic levels, while having hired over 1,000 new employees.

The opening of 18 new bases and the addition of over 300 new routes to the airline’s network also prove that Wizz Air’s business is sustainable and successful, which will support the airline in its goal of tripling its size and having 20,000 employees and 500 aircraft in its fleet by the end of the decade.

Sustainalytics’ Peer Performance Insights give an in-depth analysis of the company’s ESG strengths and weaknesses compared to its competitors and industry performance.

József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air, said: “We are proud to be in this prestigious industry-leading position which confirms Wizz Air’s sustainability efforts. Having been recognised as the most sustainable European airline reassures our steps in this direction and gives us extra energy to keep on developing our airline. I would like to express my gratitude to all my colleagues who have been working relentlessly to make Wizz Air the best airline in Europe. We are committed to our goals and to leading the industry by example in 2022 and beyond.”
