EVA Air Joins IATA Turbulence Aware to Boost Flight Safety

EVA Air has signed a cooperation agreement with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to join the Turbulence Aware platform, enhancing flight safety through real-time turbulence data sharing. The announcement was made during IATA’s annual general meeting held in New Delhi, where EVA Air President Clay Sun signed the agreement alongside IATA Director General Willie Walsh.
EVA Air aims to use the platform to support pilots and flight dispatchers in analyzing turbulence trends, optimizing flight paths, and minimizing exposure to risky airspace. Sun noted that turbulence incidents have increased due to climate change, and while forecasting tools have improved, turbulence remains one of the most unpredictable weather challenges.
“Turbulence Aware will allow us to improve decision-making and enhance passenger and crew safety during flights,” Sun said. He added that severe turbulence can cause structural damage, while even mild turbulence impacts passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
Walsh welcomed EVA Air to the platform, highlighting that the more airlines participate, the more accurate and effective the system becomes. In 2024, Turbulence Aware received 51.8 million reports, a 35 percent increase over the previous year. The platform currently includes data from 28 airlines and over 2,700 aircraft.
EVA Air will begin participation using 33 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft equipped to report real-time turbulence data. The information is transmitted to pilots as graphical images, enabling rapid route adjustments to avoid affected zones and improve safety and fuel efficiency. The partnership marks a significant step in global aviation collaboration on weather-related risk management.
