Ex-China Eastern Chairman Under Corruption Probe

Liu Shaoyong, the former chairman and head of China Eastern Airlines, is under investigation by China’s top anti-corruption agencies for suspected “serious violations of discipline and law.” The probe, announced by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the National Supervisory Commission on June 30, 2025, marks a significant development involving one of China’s most prominent aviation figures.

Liu led China Eastern from 2009 until stepping down in 2022. A trained pilot, he is widely credited with turning the airline around following a period of heavy financial losses. During his tenure, he oversaw China Eastern’s 2010 merger with Shanghai Airlines and spearheaded a strategic venture with Qantas Group in 2012 to establish Jetstar Hong Kong. That same year, the airline was named among the 50 most valuable Chinese companies by WPP.

While the anti-graft agencies have not yet disclosed specific allegations, the involvement of both the CCDI and the National Supervisory Commission signals a serious and high-level inquiry. The CCDI is the Communist Party of China’s top internal disciplinary body, while the National Supervisory Commission serves as the country’s primary corruption watchdog, operating independently from traditional judicial branches.

China Eastern is the nation’s second-largest airline and is state-owned, alongside peers Air China and China Southern. The investigation into Liu adds to a broader crackdown on corruption across various sectors in China, as authorities continue to scrutinize high-ranking executives in state-run enterprises.

As of now, no formal charges have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
