Explora Journeys announced on April 5 that world-renowned oceanographer, explorer and conservationist Dr. Sylvia Earle is Explora Journey’s godmother for the new line’s very first ship, the EXPLORA I.

Explora Journeys, MSC’s luxury ocean cruise line, is expected to have a fleet of six ships all designed with sustainability in mind.

Dr. Earle announced her appointment in a video showcasing the new brand and its sustainability message. Dr. Sylvia Earle will be present during the EXPLORA I’s naming ceremony in Civitavecchia, Rome on July 8, 2023.

“I am honored to be chosen as the Godmother for EXPLORA I and look forward to a meaningful relationship between Mission Blue, Explora Journeys and the MSC Foundation toward protecting and restoring the ocean globally,” said Dr. Earle, who is also the Founder and Chairman of Mission Blue, which advocates for ocean conservation and exploration.

The ship’s first itinerary is a 15-night “Into Epic Fjords and the Arctic Circle” departing July 17, 2023 from Southampton, United Kingdom. The ship will offer 461 rooms and suites, including oversized room categories such as Ocean Penthouses and Ocean Residences, which were unveiled earlier this year.

“We are honored to have Dr. Sylvia Earle as the Godmother of our first luxury ship, EXPLORA I,” said Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys. “Her lifelong commitment to ocean conservation and exploration makes her an inspiration to us all. We share her passion for protecting the world’s oceans, and we are excited to partner with her on this important mission.”
