ExpressJet Airlines Eyes 2H24 Revival with Boeing 777 Charters
ExpressJet Airlines, based in Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson, is gearing up for a relaunch in the second half of 2024 under new ownership. The airline plans to kickstart operations with a single Boeing 777-200ER, focusing on exclusive domestic and international charter flights.
In a recent notification to the US Department of Transportation (DOT), ExpressJet outlined its intent to resume charter air transportation, with plans to undergo the conversion of its Air Operator’s Certificate from Part 121 domestic to Part 121 supplemental authority. The anticipated approval for the new AOC is expected by mid-2024.
The chosen aircraft for the revival is a 777-200ER with registration N771LG (msn 33396), leased from sister company Logistic Air. The aircraft, previously operated by JAL – Japan Airlines, will undergo extensive maintenance and cabin refurbishment before entering service. While specific details about the seat layout remain undisclosed, ExpressJet clarified that it will not be engaging in scheduled passenger business.
ExpressJet’s management emphasizes its decades of experience in overseeing successful air carrier and aviation operations. Backed by new ownership and ample capital, the airline aims to position itself as a robust contender in the US airline industry through its planned widebody charter operations, according to the DOT notice.
ExpressJet Airlines, once a major regional capacity provider with the world’s largest fleet of E145s, faced a hiatus after United Airlines terminated its capacity purchase agreement in September 2020. Following an unsuccessful attempt to relaunch as an independent regional scheduled operator under the aha! brand, the carrier suspended operations in August 2022. Polaris 8 LLC, the current owner, acquired the company during the subsequent Chapter 11 restructuring, holding interests in Logistic Air and Global SuperTanker Services.
