The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently announced a significant funding allocation of $66.2 million to 23 airports across the United States. This funding is part of a broader initiative under the infrastructure law passed by Congress in 2021, aimed at enhancing and modernizing airport facilities nationwide.

So far, the 2021 legislation has enabled nearly $9 billion in funding for various airport projects. These projects span a wide range of improvements, including the development of runways and taxiways, enhancing safety and sustainability measures, and upgrading terminals, airport-transit connections, and roadways.

This latest tranche of funding is particularly notable for its focus on smaller market airports. For instance, Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport (AMA) in Amarillo, Texas, has been granted $1.8 million for terminal upgrades. AMA, a crucial node in the region, is served by airlines such as Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. It boasts one of the longest runways in the United States, measuring 13,502 feet.

Another recipient, Great Falls International Airport (GTF) in Montana, has been allocated $1.3 million for terminal improvements. GTF is a hub for airlines including Alaska Airlines, Allegiant, Delta Air Lines, and United.

Rafael Hernandez Airport (BQN) in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, is also among the beneficiaries, receiving $1.6 million for tower rehabilitation. BQN is served by carriers such as JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines.

Shannetta Griffin, FAA Associate Administrator for Airports, emphasizes the importance of these investments. She notes that the agency is prioritizing the replacement and upgrading of critical infrastructure and equipment to enhance facilities for air passengers. Griffin assures that these investments are a key part of the FAA’s commitment to seamless improvements that will be noticeable to travelers in the future.

The FAA’s latest package of grants covers a diverse array of projects. These include improvements in drainage systems, acquisition of new equipment, construction of new terminals and towers, and enhancements to roads, taxi lanes, and runway signage. This comprehensive approach underlines the FAA’s dedication to elevating the standard of airport infrastructure across the United States, ensuring safer, more efficient, and sustainable air travel.
