FAA Seeks Affordable New Runway Safety Lighting Systems

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is calling on industry stakeholders to help identify cost-effective alternatives to the nation’s existing runway safety lighting systems. Through a new Request for Information (RFI), the agency aims to gather innovative ideas and technology solutions that could improve runway safety and operational efficiency at airports across the country.
Runway incursions remain a top safety concern for aviation regulators. While traditional lighting systems such as Runway Status Lights have proven effective at reducing collisions and near-misses, their installation and maintenance can be expensive—particularly at smaller airports. By exploring new technologies, the FAA hopes to develop a system that provides the same or higher level of safety at a lower cost, enabling wider deployment nationwide.
The RFI invites proposals from manufacturers, technology firms and airport operators, encouraging solutions that integrate emerging innovations such as LED technology, smart sensors, and data-driven control systems. The agency is especially interested in scalable, modular systems that can be tailored to different airport sizes and layouts while reducing installation complexity and maintenance needs.
Industry responses will inform the FAA’s next steps in designing pilot programs and setting technical standards for future runway lighting upgrades. By partnering with private sector innovators, the agency aims to accelerate the adoption of more efficient and affordable safety systems, ultimately enhancing runway visibility for pilots and ground crews and reducing the risk of incidents at busy airports.
