Travelers planning to visit Europe can save significantly on airfare by choosing to travel during the fall “shoulder season” in September and October. According to data from the travel app Hopper, opting for fall travel instead of the peak summer season can lead to savings of up to $500 per round-trip ticket.

Europe is a top destination for U.S. tourists this summer, but those willing to wait until the fall can enjoy substantial cost reductions. Travelers to popular European cities can save an average of 34% on airfare by traveling in the fall compared to peak summer months.

For example, airfare to Rome is, on average, $1,284 during the summer but drops to $736 in the fall, resulting in savings of $548 per ticket. Similarly, travelers to London can save 32% with fall airfare prices of $693 compared to summer prices of $1,025. In Barcelona, the savings amount to 37%, with fall airfare at $757 versus $1,193 in the summer.

The fall shoulder season offers not only cost savings but also milder weather and reduced crowds, providing a better overall travel experience. However, travelers with specific time constraints, such as families with children or those restricted by work schedules, may not be able to take advantage of these savings.

This year, international travel costs have surged as travelers, eager to satisfy their pent-up wanderlust, embark on trips abroad. The demand for passports and participation in federal travel programs like Global Entry has reached historic levels. While some Covid-era restrictions have eased, the summer of 2023 has become the most expensive time on record to travel to Europe, with an average ticket price of about $1,200.

Despite these higher costs, many travelers are still enthusiastic about international travel, as indicated by the willingness of wealthier tourists with higher average household incomes to spend on leisure travel.

The fall shoulder season provides an excellent opportunity for travelers to explore Europe without the premium prices associated with peak summer travel. By opting for a September or October trip, travelers can enjoy significant savings while experiencing a more relaxed and enjoyable journey.
