Farnborough Airshow 2024 Kicked Off with a Flurry of Orders

Day one and two of this year’s Farnborough Airshow began with a flurry of orders, primarily from Asia-Pacific airlines. Boeing led the pack with the most widebody orders so far, setting a strong tone for the event. Many more orders are expected to follow throughout the rest of the show.

Korean Air opened this year’s Farnborough Airshow with a striking commitment for up to 50 Boeing widebody aircraft, provisionally signing up for 777-9s and 787-10s. The SkyTeam carrier signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) covering 20 firm orders for both the 777-9s and 787-10s, along with options for 10 more Dreamliners.

Korean Air is one of two Asia-Pacific carriers to disclose Boeing widebody orders. Japan Airlines signed for 10 787-9s and took options for 10 more, and 20 Airbus A350 and 11 A321neo order, firming up fleet plans disclosed by the Oneworld carrier in March.

Qatar Airways announced an order on July 23 for 20 more Boeing 777-9 airplanes, expanding the Middle Eastern airline’s 777X order book to nearly 100 airplanes. The order, finalized this year and listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website

In a robust start to the show, Boeing also secured a significant widebody freighter deal, with National Air Cargo signing for four 777 Freighters (777-200LRFs). Additionally, Luxair committed to two firm orders and two options for 737 MAX 10s.

While Boeing led in orders for the day, Airbus also made noteworthy gains. VietJet firmed its February preliminary commitment for 20 A330neos, and Bhutan’s Drukair signed an MoU for three Airbus A320neos and two A321XLRs, and confirmed an order for six A320neos from Libyan carrier Berniq Airways.

The deals took total commercial aircraft order announcements for the first day past the 100 mark. However, only around a third of these, 36, are firm orders, which includes the 20 A330neo commitments previously flagged by VietJet.
