Fiji Airways CEO Viljoen to Remain on Board

Fiji Airways chief executive officer and managing director Andre Viljoen will remain on the airline’s board after stepping down from his executive role at the end of September, according to Fiji’s finance minister, Biman Prasad.

Viljoen has been appointed as the next CEO of Air Mauritius, but the Fiji Airways board, chaired by Nalin Patel, will oversee the recruitment process for his successor. Prasad emphasized that Viljoen and any incoming managing director or CEO are accountable to the board under the Companies Act, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.

To maintain continuity, Viljoen will stay on as a board member to provide institutional knowledge and guidance on key projects currently underway. Prasad confirmed that the board had determined there were no conflicts of interest with Viljoen serving in both roles, given the two airlines operate in distinct markets.

However, he noted that shared aircraft types, including Airbus A350s and ATR turboprops, could present opportunities for future collaboration between Fiji Airways and Air Mauritius.

Fiji Airways, together with its regional subsidiary Fiji Link, operates a diverse fleet that includes Airbus A330-200s, A330-300s, A350-900s, ATR42-600s, ATR72-600s, Boeing 737-8s, 737-800s, and DHC-6-400s. Air Mauritius maintains a fleet of A330-200s, A330-900neos, A350-900s, and ATR72 variants.

Viljoen’s extended presence on the Fiji Airways board is expected to provide stability as the airline navigates leadership changes while continuing its growth and modernization efforts.
