Finnair Orders Embraer E195-E2 Jets, Seeks Used A320s

Finnair is accelerating its fleet renewal strategy with a firm order for Embraer E195-E2 regional jets while simultaneously seeking used Airbus A320-family aircraft to replace aging narrowbody and regional fleets.
The Finnish carrier has confirmed a new order for E195-E2 aircraft, marking a significant step toward modernizing its regional operations. The next-generation jet, part of Embraer’s E2 family, offers improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and reduced operating costs compared to older E1 models currently in service.
At the same time, Finnair is actively exploring the acquisition of up to 12 used Airbus A320 and A321ceo aircraft. These aircraft are intended to replace the airline’s oldest Airbus A319s and A320s, many of which are nearing the end of their economic life. By sourcing used aircraft, Finnair can bridge capacity needs while maintaining flexibility ahead of longer-term fleet decisions.
The airline’s fleet overhaul also extends to its regional and turboprop operations. Finnair plans to phase out six ATR turboprops and four first-generation Embraer E-Jets (E1s), aligning with a broader strategy to simplify its fleet and improve efficiency across short- and medium-haul routes.
The introduction of the E195-E2 is expected to play a key role in this transition. The aircraft provides approximately 15–25% lower fuel burn and CO₂ emissions compared to previous-generation regional jets, while offering extended range and improved passenger comfort. This makes it well suited for Finnair’s European network, where demand patterns are evolving and cost efficiency is increasingly critical.
The move comes as airlines across Europe continue to adapt to changing market conditions, including fluctuating fuel prices, geopolitical disruptions, and shifting passenger demand. For Finnair, balancing fleet modernization with operational flexibility is essential as it rebuilds its network and strengthens its competitive position.
By combining new-generation aircraft orders with the opportunistic acquisition of used narrowbodies, Finnair is pursuing a hybrid fleet strategy that allows it to manage costs while maintaining capacity. The approach also reflects broader industry trends, where airlines are increasingly turning to the secondary aircraft market to address short-term needs amid delivery delays from manufacturers.
As the airline progresses with its fleet renewal, the mix of E195-E2 jets and additional Airbus narrowbodies is expected to enhance operational efficiency, reduce emissions, and support Finnair’s long-term growth strategy across Europe and beyond.
