Isavia Regional Airports, which manages Akureyri International Airport (AEY) in the north and Egilsstaðir International Airport (EGS) in the east, is positioning both gateways as key connectors to Iceland’s natural landscapes and tourism market.

In 2023, AEY marked a milestone when easyJet became the first foreign carrier to offer scheduled international service, launching flights from London Gatwick and later Manchester. Serving a regional population of more than 18,000, the airport is seen as a strong base for sustainable tourism growth. To support demand, AEY unveiled a new terminal as part of its 70th anniversary, with expanded capacity from 4–5 to 12–14 aircraft, plus two dedicated jet zones.

At Routes Europe 2025, CEO Sigrun Bjork Jakobsdottir said Isavia Regional Airports is eager to attract new partners and expand its network across Germany, France, and Scandinavia. Supported by government-backed route development programs and competitive incentive schemes, the airports aim to strengthen their role in regional connectivity.

Jakobsdottir emphasized growing interest in linking Scandinavian destinations with Iceland’s Arctic regions, noting the potential for stronger flows into northern Iceland. She highlighted Routes Europe 2025 as an important platform for “fruitful discussions regarding the sustainability of new routes.”

As a Routes 360 member, Isavia Regional Airports continues to showcase unserved route opportunities and its long-term growth strategy, reinforcing its position as a key player in Iceland’s aviation and tourism development.
