Georgian Airways Expands Operations with Its First Freighter, a Boeing 767

Georgian Airways, based in Tbilisi, has recently expanded its fleet with the acquisition of its first cargo aircraft, a Boeing 767-300ER(BDSF), marking a significant step in the airline’s growth and diversification into freight services. The aircraft, registered as 4L-GMC (msn 24209), was leased from Cargo Aircraft Management, a subsidiary of Air Transport Services Group.

On July 29, 2024, the aircraft made its journey from Wilmington International Airport directly to Tbilisi. This 33.1-year-old aircraft, which has been converted for freight operations by Israel Aerospace Industries at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport, is poised to begin revenue service soon, with Georgian Airways being its first operator post-conversion.

Prior to this development, Georgian Airways operated a passenger-centric fleet that includes two Boeing 737-700s, two Boeing 737-800s, and one recently delivered but currently inactive Boeing 767-300ER, as well as a Challenger 850 and a Global 6000 for business travel.

The introduction of the Boeing 767 freighter is particularly noteworthy as it represents a strategic diversification for Georgian Airways, which has historically been focused on passenger services. This move into cargo operations is anticipated to enhance the airline’s logistical capabilities and meet the growing demand for freight services in the region.

This development also highlights the historical and operational connections between Georgian Airways and similarly named Georgian Airlines, a cargo-focused carrier also based in Tbilisi. While the two airlines were once affiliated, with Georgian Airlines functioning as a cargo subsidiary, they now operate independently. Georgian Airlines is co-owned by Tamaz Gaiashvili and its CEO, Irakli Mezvrishvili, and it currently operates two Boeing 767-300ER(BDSF)s, one Boeing 737-800(BCF), and two Boeing 737-800(SF)s. Meanwhile, Georgian Airways is primarily owned by David Gaiashvili, with a minority stake held by Georgian Air Services LLC.

The entry of Georgian Airways into the freight market with its newly acquired Boeing 767 is set to redefine its role in the regional aviation industry, enhancing its capacity to support commerce and trade within and beyond the Georgian borders.
