German Government Considers Leaving X Over Algorithm Concerns

The German government is debating whether to delete its presence on X, formerly known as Twitter, citing concerns over the platform’s algorithms. These algorithms, according to a government spokesperson, promote polarizing and agitated discourse rather than balanced and objective discussions.

“This is a permanent consideration that we have to revisit continuously,” the spokesperson said on Friday, following a live talk on X between Elon Musk, the platform’s owner, and Alice Weidel, leader of Germany’s far-right AfD party.

For now, the government has decided to stay on X due to its wide audience reach. However, Musk’s growing support for far-right and anti-establishment parties, including his recent endorsement of the AfD, has stirred controversy. The AfD, labeled a right-wing extremist group by German security services, opposes immigration and Islam.

Musk’s stance has prompted protests from German institutions, including unions and universities, which have already left the platform. His endorsement of the AfD ahead of Germany’s February 23 election has drawn criticism in Berlin, although the government denies that Musk’s political involvement influences their concerns about X.

The spokesperson emphasized that Brussels would determine whether X is complying with legal obligations during the election period. The German government continues to evaluate its role on the platform amid growing scrutiny over its impact on political discourse.
