Ghana Advances Flag Carrier Plans With U.S. Aviation Partner

Ghana is advancing plans to reestablish a national airline, with the government now in discussions with U.S.-based World Aviation Group (WAG) to serve as a potential technical and investment partner. On April 4, Ghana’s Ministry of Transport held a key meeting where WAG presented a detailed proposal for launching the country’s new flag carrier.

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the proposal includes investment in a modern fleet, development of a strong route network, and adoption of international best practices in safety and customer service. The plan also features feasibility studies, financial projections, strategic airline partnerships, and a hub-and-spoke model to boost connectivity across Ghana and West Africa.

Nikpe emphasized that a reliable national airline is central to Ghana’s economic strategy, especially in reducing high airfares on routes dominated by foreign carriers and improving regional air access. He expressed strong interest in WAG’s proposal and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to identifying a sustainable, long-term partner.

President John Dramani Mahama reiterated these goals during a December state-of-the-nation address, stressing the need for competent partners in reviving a national carrier. The push follows previous failed attempts, including efforts to launch GhanaAirlines with Ashanti Airlines, which stalled in May 2024 due to certification issues.

Earlier partnerships with Ethiopian Airlines in 2018 and EgyptAir in 2020 also failed to materialize. Ghana has lacked a national airline since the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010, which followed the demise of Ghana Airways in 2004.
