Ghana Forms Task Team to Launch New National Airline

The Ghanaian government has appointed a 10-member task team to develop the business plan and operational framework for a new national airline. The move follows a directive from President John Mahama, according to an April 29 letter made public on May 7.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has been instructed to assemble the task force, which is led by Charles Asare, former managing director of Ghana Airports Company Limited. Other members include current managing director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority director-general Stephen Arthur, and several aviation experts, former officials, and a representative from the Ministry of Transport.
The task team’s responsibilities include drafting the business model, coordinating with potential strategic and technical partners, managing the regulatory certification process, and overseeing key startup operations such as staffing, fleet procurement, and route planning. The team will report progress directly to the president.
During the task force’s inauguration on May 7, Nikpe stated: “We are prepared to do things differently… with all the business sense that will guide us in establishing a functional national airline.”
In April, the government held discussions with the US-based World Aviation Group, which submitted a detailed proposal to partner in launching the airline.
President Mahama previously announced the renewed airline initiative during his December state-of-the-nation address, following earlier failed attempts involving Ashanti Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, and EgyptAir.
Ghana has been without a national carrier since the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010 and Ghana Airways in 2004.
