Ghana Seeks UAE Partnership to Launch New National Airline

Ghana is seeking technical assistance from the United Arab Emirates to help establish a new national airline, following a two-day state visit by Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
According to a statement from Ghana’s foreign ministry, the visit explored avenues for collaboration across several sectors, including renewable energy, artificial intelligence, education, healthcare, aviation, defence, and labor export.
In a May 13 social media post, Ablakwa noted that UAE companies had committed to visiting Ghana in the coming weeks to explore investment opportunities aligned with President John Mahama’s economic agenda. “We discussed two priority areas of President Mahama’s government—labour export for Ghanaian youth to the UAE and technical support for a new national airline,” Ablakwa said.
The Ghanaian government recently appointed a 10-member task force to develop a business plan and operational framework for the proposed national carrier. The initiative signals another effort to revive Ghana’s aviation sector after previous attempts failed.
Ghana has not had a national airline since the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004 and its short-lived successor Ghana International Airlines, which ceased operations in 2010. Various revival plans over the years, including proposed partnerships with international carriers, have yet to materialize into a successful launch.
The government views the establishment of a new national airline as part of a broader strategy to attract foreign investment, expand aviation connectivity, and create job opportunities, particularly for youth seeking employment abroad through structured labor export programs.
