Global airport developments continue with major updates on expansion, financing, and sustainability across key markets.

In Spain, Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) will undergo a €3.2 billion ($3.7 billion) expansion approved by Spain’s Ministry of Transport and the Catalan government. Operator Aena confirmed that the project includes extending Runway 24L-06R by 500 meters to support intercontinental flights while minimizing noise. The plan also calls for a new satellite terminal, upgrades to Terminals 1 and 2, and expanded parking facilities.

In Australia, Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) has completed major construction, including the passenger terminal, ahead of its late-2026 opening. The A$5 billion ($3.2 billion) airport will operate 24/7, unlike Sydney Airport’s overnight curfews. Qantas, Jetstar, Air New Zealand, and Singapore Airlines have already committed to launching flights from WSI. The airport’s single runway spans 12,000 feet, while over 6,000 solar panels and rainwater recycling systems will support its sustainability goals.

In the United States, Tampa International Airport (TPA) shared growth projections at the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) conference. TPA’s domestic catchment area will grow from 3.3 million to 3.6 million people by 2030, while its international market will expand from 4.3 million to 4.5 million passengers by 2029. Southwest leads TPA’s market share at 24.6%, followed by Delta and American Airlines. TPA serves 107 nonstop destinations, including 21 international routes, ranking 27th-busiest in the U.S.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi Airports and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company signed an agreement to enhance Zayed International Airport’s (AUH) power and water infrastructure using advanced technologies to improve efficiency and support economic growth.
