Godfather of AI Backs Elon Musk’s Lawsuit Against OpenAI Evolution
Last year, OpenAI announced its controversial plan to transition into a for-profit entity, citing the need to raise capital for its mission. This move introduced a capped-profit structure allowing limited returns for investors, including Microsoft, NVIDIA, and SoftBank, who recently secured $6.6 billion in funding. Despite the cash infusion, OpenAI faces pressure to fully embrace a for-profit model, with risks of external interference and hostile takeovers if it fails to comply within two years.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has filed lawsuits against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, accusing them of abandoning the organization’s original non-profit mission. Musk’s latest legal claim alleges OpenAI is concealing its achievement of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) for financial gain. His legal team asserts the new suit is “far more forceful” than the previous.
Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI,” has voiced support for Musk’s efforts, highlighting OpenAI’s original safety-focused charter and tax benefits tied to its non-profit status. Hinton and advocacy group Encode argue that allowing OpenAI’s shift sends a dangerous precedent across the AI sector.
Reports suggest OpenAI may scrap a key AGI clause that links it to Microsoft, enabling greater independence as it approaches AGI benchmarks. CEO Sam Altman has hinted at the imminent arrival of AGI and the firm’s focus on superintelligence, claiming it could revolutionize scientific progress and accelerate AI breakthroughs tenfold.
The lawsuits and internal pressures underline the high-stakes battle over AI’s future leadership and governance.
