GOL Airlines Boeing 737-8 Collides with Service Vehicle at GIG

On the night of February 11, 2025, a GOL Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 collided with a service vehicle during takeoff at Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport (GIG). The aircraft, registered PS-GPP, was en route from Rio de Janeiro to Fortaleza (FOR) on flight GLO1674.
At approximately 22:00 local time, the aircraft began its takeoff from runway 10, Brazil’s second-longest runway, when it struck a service vehicle. Local media reports indicate that the aircraft sustained damage to its engine cowling and left wing. Passengers onboard reported hearing a loud noise, similar to a tire bursting, followed by significant shaking, as the aircraft experienced the impact.
A video captured by a passenger and shared on social media platform X showed the sound of the collision. The Aviation Safety Network (ASN) confirmed that the takeoff was aborted immediately after the impact, and the aircraft came to a complete stop on the runway. The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team quickly responded to the incident, and all 167 passengers and crew members safely exited the aircraft via airstairs. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
RIOgaleão, the operator of GIG Airport, issued a statement to local media confirming that there had been “an incident without victims between a maintenance car and an airplane on one of the airport’s runways.” The airport operator also reassured the public that airport operations remained unaffected, with landings and takeoffs continuing as scheduled.
While the incident caused some disruption, it appears that both the airline and airport authorities took swift action to ensure passenger safety, and normal airport operations resumed promptly.
