The Somali government has acquired two Airbus A320-200 aircraft as part of its plan to relaunch Somali Airlines by the end of the third quarter of 2025. The announcement was made by Minister of Transport and Aviation Mohamed Farah Nuuh during a press conference in Mogadishu on July 28.

“This company will be operational, God willing, within two months. We have acquired two aircraft, which will be flown in for us, and after these two are deployed they will be followed by two more,” Nuuh stated.

The aircraft were reportedly sourced from Lima Holding Group, although ch-aviation has not been able to independently confirm the identity of the lessor or the specific aircraft involved.

The revived Somali Airlines is expected to operate international routes, aiming to boost economic growth and connectivity in the region. The airline’s return comes alongside broader aviation development efforts, including the construction of a new international airport at Mahay. Groundbreaking for the facility took place on June 30, 2025.

Designed to eventually replace Mogadishu’s current airport, the Mahay International Airport will have an initial annual capacity of 8 million passengers and is slated to open by the end of the decade.

Somali Airlines originally operated from 1964 until it ceased operations in 1991 due to the outbreak of civil war. Although a revival was previously discussed by the former government in 2023, this latest announcement marks the most concrete step yet in restoring the national carrier after more than three decades of dormancy.
