Hawaiian Airlines Flight from Tokyo to Honolulu Encounters Turbulence, Injuring Passengers

On September 8th, 2023, a Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330-200 (registration N370HA) experienced turbulence while enroute from Tokyo Haneda to Honolulu, resulting in injuries to passengers.

Hawaiian Airlines Flight HA-864, operated by an Airbus A330-200 (registration N370HA), was enroute from Tokyo Haneda, Japan, to Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, with 257 passengers and 13 crew members on board. During the climb at FL265, turbulence was encountered, prompting the crew to halt the ascent at FL270. This turbulence caused injuries to several passengers. The aircraft subsequently returned to Haneda, where it made a safe landing on runway 34R approximately 95 minutes after departure. Thankfully, none of the four injured passengers required hospitalization.

After remaining on the ground for approximately 3 hours, the aircraft resumed its journey and reached Honolulu with a delay of 4.5 hours.

Japan’s Ministry of Transport has reported that four passengers sustained minor injuries during the turbulence incident. None of the injured individuals required hospitalization, and the Ministry is currently conducting an investigation into the occurrence.

Additionally, the airline reported that following the turbulence encounter, the crew received indications of a possible engine (Rolls-Royce Trent 772) fault.

According to the FAA, four passengers received minor injuries when the aircraft encountered turbulence.

Hawaiian Airlines has a fleet of 24 Airbus A330-200s, which are wide-body long-haul aircraft that can carry up to 278 passengers. The A330-200s are used for domestic and international flights, such as between Hawaii and the US mainland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea.
