Hawaiian Airlines Names Diana Birkett Rakow as New CEO

Hawaiian Airlines announced that Chief Executive Officer Joe Sprague will retire effective October 29, marking the end of a significant leadership chapter. Sprague, who spent 25 years at Alaska Airlines before taking the helm at Hawaiian Airlines following its acquisition, will remain on the airline’s board to support a smooth transition.
Taking over the role is Diana Birkett Rakow, who currently serves as senior vice president of public affairs and sustainability at Alaska Airlines. Rakow joined Alaska Airlines eight years ago and has played a pivotal role in shaping the group’s sustainability initiatives and external relations. Upon assuming her new position, she will continue reporting to Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group, which owns Hawaiian Airlines.
Alaska Air Group finalized its $1.9 billion purchase of Hawaiian Airlines in September 2024, integrating the carrier into its broader network while maintaining its island-focused brand identity. The leadership transition comes as the combined company works to enhance route connectivity, streamline operations, and expand its sustainability programs across both airlines.
Sprague’s tenure at Hawaiian Airlines has been marked by post-acquisition integration efforts and steady leadership during a transformative period for the airline. Rakow’s appointment signals a focus on long-term strategic growth, community engagement, and environmental stewardship as the carrier looks to strengthen its position in the competitive Pacific market. The transition is expected to maintain operational continuity while advancing the airline’s customer and sustainability goals under its new leadership.
