Historic Salt Lake Depot Revives as Asher Adams
Salt Lake City’s storied Union Pacific Depot has undergone a captivating transformation, emerging as the newly opened Asher Adams Hotel. Built in 1908 in the Second French Empire style, this historic landmark now houses a boutique Autograph Collection property that seamlessly blends its early 20th-century charm with modern luxury. The result is a must-see destination for travelers seeking an immersive experience steeped in heritage, comfort, and contemporary design.
The depot’s remarkable rebirth comes courtesy of global architecture firm HKS, working in tandem with JNS Architecture + Interior Design, Lang Lighting Studio, Nine Dots Arts, Reaveley Engineers, Blum Engineers, Holmes, and MGB+A Studio. Together, these partners meticulously preserved 48,500 square feet of original space, including murals, skylights, stained glass, and grand arched windows. Guests checking in are greeted by a fusion of historical grandeur and fresh elegance, enhanced by a newly constructed eight-story addition. Despite its modern silhouette, this new tower consciously defers to the depot’s iconic character, allowing the historic structure to remain the visual centerpiece.
“We sought to celebrate the iconic Union Pacific Depot while creating a sophisticated, contemporary design that respects the building’s original character,” says Emir Tursic, principal-in-charge at HKS. “The new addition’s refined and restrained aesthetic allows the historic station to remain the centerpiece while introducing a modern hospitality experience that is equally timeless and inviting.” As such, the original depot now hosts the hotel lobby, meeting spaces, and 13 specialty rooms and suites—each highlighting the building’s historic allure. Meanwhile, most of the hotel’s 225 guest rooms are housed within the adjacent tower, giving travelers a choice between old-world charm and sleek modernity.
Dining at Asher Adams Hotel promises to be a highlight of the Salt Lake visit. Four distinct venues offer culinary variety: Rouser, an elevated New American restaurant; No. 119, a whiskey-forward cocktail lounge overlooking the depot’s Grand Hall; Counterpart, a go-to spot for coffee and pastries; and The Bar at Asher Adams, a sophisticated space inspired by the golden age of train travel. With 9,600 square feet of adaptable meeting and event space, the property caters to business conferences, social gatherings, and milestone celebrations, all within a setting that evokes history and innovation.
Situated in downtown Salt Lake City, Asher Adams Hotel provides convenient access to the TRAX light rail system, making transfers to Salt Lake International Airport and local attractions a breeze. The Delta Center, Salt Palace Convention Center, and Temple Square lie within comfortable walking distance, adding urban excitement and cultural exploration to the hotel’s list of draws. Guests can also enjoy spectacular views of the Wasatch Mountains, combining the best of city life with Utah’s stunning natural scenery.
Named after 19th-century cartographers John R. Asher and George H. Adams—who chronicled crucial railroad routes—the hotel pays homage to the railroads that once converged in Salt Lake City. “Our concept for Asher Adams represents the industrious, pioneering spirit of Salt Lake City,” explains Nicole Nathan, partner at JNS Architecture + Interior Design. “Preserving and reviving the Depot’s rich history, while celebrating Utah’s role as the pivotal link in the transcontinental railroad, showcases how Salt Lake has evolved into an international hub of business, outdoor recreation, and cultural heritage.”
