Holland America Sets Sail With Sushi & Whiskey Feats

Holland America Line has embarked on a culinary and beverage adventure that is capturing the attention of foodies and spirit enthusiasts alike. In an impressive display of creativity and collaboration, the cruise line produced what it believes is the longest maki sushi roll at sea. On March 30, renowned chef Masaharu Morimoto, serving as the company’s global fresh fish ambassador, led a team of more than 50 culinary professionals aboard the Rotterdam. Their combined efforts resulted in a maki sushi roll that stretched roughly 90 feet long and featured more than 55 pounds of sushi rice along with 33 pounds of premium tuna. For Morimoto, this challenge was both exciting and exhilarating, a true testament to the inventive spirit of his team as they pushed the boundaries of culinary art on the high seas.
This spectacular feat was not merely a promotional stunt but a celebration of innovation and the passion for fine dining that Holland America Line strives to deliver to its guests. The event coincided with the launch of the new Morimoto By Sea premium sushi bar, which promises to elevate onboard dining experiences. The new sushi bar is set to debut on Rotterdam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Eurodam from now through June, expanding the brand’s presence that has already been warmly received on Nieuw Amsterdam since its introduction in 2023. By blending traditional techniques with contemporary flair, the new sushi bar aims to offer guests a truly immersive and memorable culinary journey during their voyage.
Adding to the excitement, Holland America Line has also announced an expansion of its single barrel whiskey program—a move that is sure to delight connoisseurs of fine spirits. What began in 2024 with a single barrel of Buffalo Trace is now growing into an impressive collection that will include nine distinct single barrels sourced from various prestigious distilleries. Among the offerings are two barrels of Weller bourbon from Buffalo Trace, featuring the coveted Weller Full Proof and Weller Antique 107 expressions. In addition, the program will include three barrels from Angel’s Envy along with carefully selected barrels from Uncle Nearest, Woodford Reserve, WhistlePig, and Westland Distillery. These exceptional spirits are slated to be available fleetwide by May, while supplies last, allowing passengers to sample rare and unique whiskeys during their cruise.
Complementing the whiskey expansion, the line will also showcase a peated single barrel from Westland as part of its innovative “PNW Penicillin” cocktail, a creation brought to life by award-winning bartender Sam Ross in 2024. Drew Foulk, the senior manager of beverage and dining operations and innovation for Holland America Line, summed up the excitement surrounding these developments. He stated, “Get ready for an exclusive whiskey experience crafted specifically for enthusiasts the next time you sail with us.” His words highlight the cruise line’s commitment to providing unparalleled dining and drinking experiences that stand apart in today’s competitive cruise market.
