Hong Kong Airport Expands Southeast Asian Network with New Partnerships
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is working to enhance its connectivity to Southeast Asia, as it signs new partnerships with airlines and airport operators in the region.
The airport has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Airports Corporation Vietnam, which manages Vietnam’s airports. The agreement focuses on management exchanges, talent development through the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy, and sustainability initiatives within the aviation industry.
Additionally, HKG has forged similar cooperation agreements with Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet, aiming to boost connectivity and collaboration.
In a separate development, Hong Kong International Airport signed an MOU with Cambodia Airports, which operates Phnom Penh International Airport and other Cambodian airports with support from Vinci Airports.
Fred Lam, Chairman of the Airport Authority of Hong Kong, highlighted that these agreements will facilitate the expansion of routes and increase flight frequencies connecting Hong Kong with Southeast Asia. Currently, there are 85 weekly commercial flights between HKG and Vietnam, and 10 weekly flights between HKG and Cambodia.
HKG reported handling 4.3 million passengers in June 2024, a 29.1% increase year-over-year, with significant growth in traffic from Southeast Asia, mainland China, and Japan. For the first half of 2024, the airport managed 25.3 million passengers, up 52.8% year-over-year, and cargo traffic rose by 17.9% to 2.4 million tonnes.
The airport is optimistic that passenger traffic on peak days will return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024.
