Hong Kong Airport Reports Surge in Traffic and Profit

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has reported strong growth in passenger traffic, cargo throughput, and net profit for the 2024/25 fiscal year, marking a major recovery and expansion milestone for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). Passenger numbers surged 21.6% year-on-year to 54.9 million, while cargo volume climbed 10.3% to 5 million tons, reaffirming HKIA’s position as the world’s busiest cargo airport. Aircraft movements also jumped 20.5% to reach 373,050.

The positive figures coincide with the commissioning of the airport’s long-anticipated Three-Runway System (3RS) in November 2024. Designed to increase aircraft handling capacity by 50%, the system has already shown results. During the peak Chinese New Year travel period in early 2025, HKIA managed up to 75 return flights to Japan in a single day, showcasing its ability to meet surging travel demand.

Financially, AAHK recorded a net profit of HK$2.4 billion ($306 million), reflecting a 43% year-on-year increase. This strong performance enabled the authority to declare a dividend of HK$1.3 billion to the Hong Kong SAR Government—the first since the 2014/15 fiscal year. At that time, AAHK had suspended dividends to reinvest surpluses into funding the ambitious 3RS project.

Looking ahead to fiscal 2025/26, AAHK plans to begin phased operations of the new Terminal 2 and complete upgrades to the airport’s business aviation complex. These enhancements are part of HKIA’s broader vision to solidify its status as a leading global aviation hub in both passenger and cargo markets.
