Hotel vs. Airbnb Costs in U.S. Cities: Where to Save and Where to Splurge

In the ongoing debate of whether to choose hotels or Airbnbs for accommodations, Upgraded Points has shed light on the cost differences across 100 major U.S. cities. Their research highlights where travelers can save by opting for Airbnbs or when it might be more economical to stay in a hotel.

“Travelers often weigh the options between hotels, which provide comfort and convenience, and Airbnbs, which offer a more localized experience,” said Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief at Upgraded Points. “Our analysis focuses on the financial aspect of this decision, revealing where you can get the best bang for your buck.”

In the majority of cities analyzed—71 out of 100—Airbnb proved to be the more cost-effective choice, with an average nightly rate of $156, significantly lower than the $208 average for hotels. Particularly in the Midwest, travelers can save approximately $200 per night by choosing Airbnb over traditional hotel stays.

However, in some cities like San Jose, California, and McAllen, Texas, the price difference is negligible, with only a $1.50 difference in average nightly rates.
