HX Cruises, formerly known as Hurtigruten Expeditions, is set to revolutionize Arctic travel by launching new Greenland expedition cruises that include roundtrip flights from Newark. This innovative offering makes HX the first cruise line to provide flight-inclusive packages from Newark to Nuuk, capitalizing on dedicated flight allocations through United Airlines’ new direct route.

The debut of these groundbreaking itineraries coincides with Greenland National Day and the summer solstice, with the first voyages scheduled to sail on June 21, 2025. These cruises mark a significant development in Greenland tourism, leveraging the recent opening of Nuuk International Airport. The airport, which officially opened in November, boasts a 7,217-foot runway, enabling larger aircraft to land and facilitating United Airlines’ nonstop seasonal flights from Newark beginning this June.

Laali Berthelsen, HX’s local product manager and a Nuuk resident, emphasized the transformative potential of this expansion. “Greenland is on the cusp of transformation,” Berthelsen said. “With the opening of our new international airport and direct flights, Greenland is more accessible than ever. As interest grows, we have a responsibility to ensure tourism uplifts our communities and respects our environment.”

With over 20 years of experience in Greenland and a heritage of Arctic exploration dating back to 1896, HX Cruises brings unparalleled expertise to its new offerings. The expeditions will be hosted aboard the hybrid-powered MS Fridtjof Nansen, a vessel designed for sustainable travel and comfort. The new itineraries have been developed in partnership with Greenlandic communities on the island’s west coast, ensuring that each voyage supports local economies and preserves cultural heritage.

Each cruise will feature cultural ambassadors and support the HX Foundation’s initiatives, which have already contributed more than $186,605 to youth education, mental health, and cultural preservation projects in Greenlandic communities. This commitment to responsible tourism ensures that guests not only experience the natural beauty of Greenland but also engage meaningfully with its inhabitants.

All HX Cruises’ trips are now all-inclusive, encompassing meals, drinks, excursions, and unique science opportunities as part of the fare. This comprehensive approach guarantees that travelers can fully immerse themselves in the Arctic experience without worrying about additional costs.

A highlight of the new cruises is the presence of Aleqatsiaq Peary, an Inuk storyteller, musician, and hunter from Qaanaaq. Peary, the great-great-great-grandson of famed Arctic explorer Robert Peary, will join all new departures. “If you’ve read about Arctic explorers, these itineraries offer a chance to experience it for yourself,” Peary stated. “To see what they saw and feel what it was like to journey to the far north aboard their ships.” Through his storytelling and cultural insights, Peary will deepen guests’ understanding of Greenland’s traditions and connect them with remote communities.

The new departures include:

  • “Ice Giants of Disko Bay”: A 12-day expedition departing June 21, focusing on the stunning glaciers and marine life of Disko Bay.
  • “Mythical Lands of the North”: A 16-day voyage departing July 1 and July 15, exploring the rich folklore and dramatic landscapes of northern Greenland.
  • “Farthest North to Thule and Kane Basin”: A 20-day trip departing July 29, delving into the extreme environments of Thule and Kane Basin.
  • “Northwest Passage–Through the Arctic Labyrinth”: A 26-day voyage departing August 16, navigating the historic Northwest Passage and its intricate ice formations.

HX Cruises’ new Greenland expeditions promise a unique blend of adventure, cultural immersion, and sustainable tourism, setting a new standard for Arctic exploration. With inclusive packages and expert-guided journeys, travelers can embark on an unforgettable voyage from Newark to the breathtaking landscapes of Greenland.
