HX Expeditions is set to elevate its world-class polar expedition experiences with a major refurbishment of two of its most popular ships, the MS Fram and MS Spitsbergen. The company announced plans to invest over €7 million in upgrades that will enhance onboard amenities, scientific facilities, and overall guest comfort across both vessels. These improvements are designed to deliver a more immersive, comfortable, and seamless adventure for travelers exploring the polar regions.

The MS Fram, known as HX Expeditions’ first purpose-built polar expedition ship, can accommodate up to 250 guests at a time. This iconic vessel is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade that includes a newly designed Science Center—an innovation aimed at deepening the educational and exploratory aspects of its voyages. Guests will enjoy refreshed and modernized accommodations, enhanced public spaces, and improved crew facilities to ensure a superior onboard experience. In addition, the Aune Restaurant will receive significant enhancements, offering an elevated dining experience that complements the adventure-focused atmosphere of the ship.

Scheduled to be taken out of dry dock in Panama in April 2025, the MS Fram refurbishment is on track for completion with service resuming on May 26, 2025. The planned updates not only boost the ship’s functional capabilities but also reinforce its reputation as a leader in polar expedition travel. With state-of-the-art features and a focus on scientific discovery, the new Science Center will provide guests with unique insights into the Arctic and Antarctic environments, encouraging hands-on learning and engagement with the natural world.

Meanwhile, the MS Spitsbergen is also set for a significant upgrade, with improvements mirroring those on the MS Fram. The Spitsbergen will receive a brand-new Science Center to enhance its research and exploration capabilities. Upgraded accommodations and the refresh of the Explorer Bar will offer guests even greater comfort and style, while a new Brygge bistro will provide additional dining options. The comprehensive refurbishment of the MS Spitsbergen is being carried out at the Astilleros de Santander S.A.U. dry dock in Spain, with the work scheduled to take place from February through March 2025. The ship is expected to welcome guests starting April 2, 2025.

“These significant investments in MS Fram and MS Spitsbergen reflect our commitment to delivering world-class expedition experiences,” said Gebhard Rainer, CEO of HX Expeditions. “From enhanced public spaces to a stronger focus on science and education, these upgrades will elevate every aspect of the journey.” Rainer added, “When guests step aboard in spring 2025, they’ll experience a more immersive, comfortable, and seamless adventure—built on our dedication to continuous improvement.”

The refurbishments come at a time when HX Expeditions is experiencing robust demand for polar travel, with guests increasingly seeking expeditions that offer both adventure and deep educational insights. By modernizing its fleet, HX Expeditions not only strengthens its competitive edge but also underlines its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the expedition travel sector.

As both ships prepare to return to service in the spring and summer of 2025, travelers can look forward to enjoying enhanced onboard facilities that set new benchmarks for polar exploration. With these strategic investments, HX Expeditions is poised to continue leading the way in delivering unforgettable, science-driven expedition experiences across the globe.
