HX Expeditions has completed an extensive $8 million refurbishment of MS Spitsbergen, enhancing the vessel’s guest experience just in time for the summer Arctic cruise season. The 220-passenger ship now features upgraded public areas, a new dining concept, an advanced science center, and a refreshed exterior painted in HX’s indigo blue and sand livery. The renovation is part of a larger project that also includes sister ship MS Fram.

MS Spitsbergen will operate in Svalbard during summer before launching HX’s new 7-day “Ultimate Norway – Arctic Expedition under the Northern Lights” itinerary this winter. These all-inclusive sailings take guests above the Arctic Circle, offering exclusive expedition experiences.

Among the key upgrades is Brygga Bistro, a casual brasserie-style dining option serving wraps, salads, and sandwiches. Part of HX’s all-inclusive program, Brygga offers flexible dining between landings or after excursions. Stefan Engl, HX’s vice president of hotel operations, noted that Brygga enhances the onboard atmosphere with comfort and accessibility.

The new Science Center supports hands-on learning with interactive displays, a small library, flexible lecture space, and citizen science workstations. Multilingual interpreter systems provide accessibility for international travelers. HX’s chief scientist, Verena Meraldi, highlighted that last year’s programs supported 32 research projects and over 30,000 citizen science submissions, with the new center set to deepen that impact, particularly around climate-sensitive Svalbard.

Additional updates include a redesigned Explorer Lounge & Bar, the introduction of HX’s Signature Cocktail Range, expanded crew areas, and ADA-compliant bathroom renovations.
