HX Launches Free Antarctic Course with University of Tasmania
Travelers embarking on HX’s (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) Antarctica voyages can now enrich their journey with a groundbreaking educational opportunity. In collaboration with the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), HX is launching a free online course that provides an in-depth exploration of the White Continent. The course, set to debut later this month alongside HX’s 2024-25 Antarctica season, offers participants the chance to earn a certificate from the University of Tasmania.
The new HX Pre-Departure Course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of Antarctica’s history, governance, wildlife, and ecology. The four-hour curriculum also covers essential topics such as the Southern Ocean, ice core studies, climate change, citizen science, and responsible tourism. Participants can access online seminars, interviews, and Q&A sessions before, during, and after their journey, enabling them to engage with the content at their own pace.
Tudor Morgan, HX’s Vice President of Sustainability, Guest Learning, and Industry Relations, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership. “We are breaking new ground in expedition travel by offering scientific educational opportunities that promote ocean conservation and academic growth,” Morgan said. “This collaboration connects the realms of exploration and academia, giving travelers a chance to deepen their understanding of polar regions while contributing to personal and academic development.”
Verena Meraldi, HX’s Chief Scientist, emphasized the course’s value for travelers seeking more than just an adventure. “This program offers a world first in our industry, providing market-leading educational content that enriches the travel experience,” Meraldi stated. “Our carefully curated syllabus is designed for curious travelers who want to explore, learn, and ultimately use that knowledge to create a positive impact.”
This innovative partnership between HX and the University of Tasmania promises to set a new standard for educational travel, offering participants a deeper connection to Antarctica while promoting sustainability and ocean conservation efforts.
