HX, formerly known as Hurtigruten Expeditions, has announced an exciting partnership with renowned marine biologist and broadcaster Monty Halls to launch The Big Blue Bag project. This initiative aims to empower individuals to engage in marine conservation by collecting and sharing crucial data on ocean health. The pilot project will take place on land in the UK and is supported by a donation from the HX Foundation, which champions environmental and community-positive initiatives in the destinations that HX visits.

The Big Blue Bag project is designed to encourage participation from individuals of all ages and backgrounds in the protection of waterways and oceans. Participants will receive a specially crafted “Big Blue Bag” containing straightforward protocols for gathering essential data on marine health, including monitoring microplastic pollution, assessing species biodiversity, measuring water temperature, and collecting coastal debris. The data collected will be uploaded to a global, open-access database, contributing to critical research that informs conservation efforts worldwide.

This partnership aligns seamlessly with HX’s mission to protect marine life and raise awareness of environmental challenges, as well as the HX Foundation’s commitment to fund and collaborate with projects and researchers focused on vulnerable ecosystems. The project embodies a community-led approach to conservation and ocean health.

Monty Halls expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We are thrilled to join forces with HX and the HX Foundation. By providing the tools and knowledge needed to protect our seas, we are creating a global movement of ocean stewards. This partnership will not only raise awareness but empower local coastal communities in the UK to take ownership of their marine environments.”

The Big Blue Bag initiative aims to expand across the UK, with a long-term vision for global outreach, bringing citizen science to coastal communities. The funding from the HX Foundation will facilitate the development of a digital platform and the production of over 50 co-branded Big Blue Bags for distribution to various communities.

This collaboration reinforces the HX Foundation’s leadership in marine preservation and marks a significant advancement in community-driven conservation efforts. With Monty Halls’ expertise and the support of the HX Foundation, The Big Blue Bag is set to become a prominent citizen science movement in the UK by 2025, delivering meaningful results for ocean health and biodiversity.
