HX’s MS Maud Set for April Relaunch After Surviving Rogue Wave Encounter
HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) has announced the scheduled return of its ship, MS Maud, to active service this spring following repairs necessitated by a rogue wave incident last month. The 570-guest vessel is set to resume its operations with expedition cruises around the British Isles in mid-April, before embarking on Arctic expeditions to Greenland and Iceland in July. Later in the year, starting in October, MS Maud will venture to Antarctica and South America.
The ship encountered a rogue wave – significantly larger and more unpredictable than surrounding waves – while traveling from Florø, Norway, to Tilbury, England, in the North Sea on December 21. The impact of the wave was severe, resulting in shattered windows and a loss of power, and it also disabled the ship’s navigational equipment. This harrowing experience saw passengers donning life vests and bracing themselves against the tumultuous sea conditions. Despite the challenges, MS Maud managed to reach Bremerhaven, Germany, under its own power, with Danish rescuers on standby.
This incident, while alarming, fortunately resulted in no serious injuries among the 266 passengers and 131 crew members on board. The swift response and eventual safe harbor arrival underscore the resilience and safety protocols of HX’s vessel.
The upcoming relaunch of MS Maud marks a significant moment for HX, as the ship resumes its journey, offering unique and adventurous expedition cruises. This event also highlights the cruise line’s commitment to safety and its capability to swiftly recover and restore operations following unforeseen maritime challenges. The relaunch is expected to be a welcome development for both the cruise line and its patrons, eager to continue exploring remote and remarkable destinations across the globe.
