Staff, particularly cabin crew members, of Spanish low-cost carrier Iberia Express are planning a 10-days-long strike to draw the airline’s management’s attention to deteriorating working conditions.

According to the Spanish trade union USO, the strike is scheduled to take place in Madrid between August 28 and September 6, 2022. In a statement released on August 17, 2022, the union claimed the event is aiming to improve working conditions for 517 Iberia Express cabin crew members, whose salaries have not been changed for seven years although living costs have significantly increased.

“USO shows its willingness to negotiate with the management of Iberia Express to call off the strike, but without neglecting that it is time to compensate the effort made by all the crew members to support the company during the pandemic,” the union statement said.

“We are very disappointed with the management of Iberia Express, who has shown no word or respect for the workers who have fought to keep the company afloat while they will receive millionaire benefits this summer. We trust that they will reconsider their proposals and land on the reality that surrounds their workers,” USO spokesperson Adriana Escauriaza said.

Iberia Express is one of the low-cost carriers of International Airlines Group (IAG) (IAG) which recently announced it had taken a 20% stake in another Spanish airline, Air Europa, after converting a loan. The move should help IAG to expand its hub in Madrid, where Iberia is based.
