In a landmark moment for Icelandair’s 87-year history, the Icelandic flag carrier has officially become the world’s newest Airbus operator with the arrival of its first Airbus A321LR. This significant fleet expansion marks a strategic shift for the airline, which has predominantly operated Boeing aircraft, including the Boeing 737 MAX and the 757 models, for decades.

On December 3, 2024, Icelandair announced the delivery of the first of three leased Airbus A321LRs, all scheduled to join the fleet before the summer of 2025. This move signals the beginning of a new era for the airline, as it diversifies its fleet to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience.

The journey towards incorporating the A321LR began on July 6, 2023, when lessor SMBC Aviation Capital and Icelandair confirmed the acquisition of four Airbus A321LR aircraft, with deliveries expected in the latter part of 2024. The partnership expanded on January 5, 2024, with the announcement of an additional A321LR set for delivery at the start of 2026. Further strengthening its fleet modernization efforts, Icelandair signed a long-term lease agreement with CDB Aviation on January 22, 2024, for two new Airbus A321LRs expected to arrive in the second half of 2025.

“The delivery of the first Airbus is a significant milestone in Icelandair’s 87-year history, and we look forward to welcoming our passengers on board later this month. The aircraft will unleash new opportunities for our great company and for Iceland as a destination and hub between continents. The efficient A321 will further strengthen our business model, increase our flexibility, and further support our sustainability effort,” said Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair President and CEO.

The Airbus A321LR is set to succeed the Boeing 757, which has been the backbone of Icelandair’s fleet for many years. The new aircraft offers a 30% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per trip compared to previous-generation aircraft, aligning with the airline’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Starting December 10, 2024, Icelandair will deploy its first A321LR on routes from Reykjavik to Copenhagen (CPH) and Stockholm (ARN), enhancing connectivity between Iceland and key Scandinavian capitals. The rollout will continue with flights to London Heathrow (LHR) commencing on December 23, 2024, and to Oslo (OSL) starting on December 24, 2024.

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are proud to see Icelandair’s colors on an Airbus aircraft. The A321LR offers a 30% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per trip compared to previous-generation competitor aircraft, as well as significantly lower noise levels. This milestone delivery is therefore a testament to our shared commitment to innovation and excellence in aviation.”

In addition to leasing agreements, Icelandair made a substantial purchase by ordering 13 Airbus A321XLR aircraft directly from Airbus in July 2023. This extended-range variant will further enhance the airline’s ability to operate longer routes with improved fuel efficiency. Notably, the first Airbus A321XLR began commercial operations for Spanish airline Iberia on November 6, 2024, highlighting the growing adoption of this advanced aircraft in the industry.

Icelandair’s fleet overhaul represents a significant investment in modernizing its operations and improving passenger comfort. The introduction of the Airbus A321LR and future A321XLR aircraft is expected to provide greater flexibility in route planning, reduce operational costs, and support the airline’s sustainability goals. Passengers can look forward to enhanced in-flight experiences as the airline continues to expand its services between continents.

As Icelandair embraces this new chapter, the airline reaffirms its commitment to connecting Iceland with the world, offering efficient and environmentally friendly travel options. The integration of Airbus aircraft into its fleet marks a pivotal step in strengthening Icelandair’s position in the global aviation market.
