Icelandair sues Kelowna Flightcraft for negligence

Icelandair (FI, Reykjavik Keflavik) has filed suit in the British Columbia Supreme Court against Canadian approved maintenance organisation Kelowna Flightcraft Ltd. t/a KF Aerospace over a collapsed landing gear two years ago.

B757-200 TF-FIA (msn 29310) with 166 passengers and crew was landing at Reykjavik Keflavik on February 7, 2020, when the right-hand strut assembly collapsed, causing an engine to impact the ground. No one was hurt. An interim report from the Icelandic accident investigation board (Rannsóknarnefndsamgönguslysa – RNSA) blamed the incident on a “failure of swivel attachment to the main strut”.

Castanet reports that Icelandair accuses Kelowna Flightcraft of negligence for having used the wrong nut to install the landing gear. “Icelandair claims the main landing gear collapse was caused by the negligence and/or breach of contract of Kelowna Flightcraft,” reads the court claim.

Icelandair is seeking damages for repairs to the aircraft, fuel, and runway clean-up, lost revenue while the aircraft was being repaired, interest, and other costs.

Kelowna Flightcraft has been under contract to maintain Icelandair’s fleet since 2010.

The company has not filed a response to the claim in court and has declined to comment as the matter is sub judice.
