IndiGo Airlines, based at Delhi International Airport, has confirmed an order for ten A320neo family jets, solidifying its commitment with Airbus. This move, officially documented in Airbus’s March 2024 order and delivery update, comes as the latest in a series of expansions for the Indian low-cost carrier (LCC). The finalized agreement was made on March 15, following an initial approval by IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Limited, in early September 2023.

The newly confirmed aircraft are part of a massive 300-jet order initially placed in 2019, which also includes a variety of A320neo and A321neo models, such as the A321-200NY(XLR). This strategic acquisition highlights IndiGo’s aggressive growth strategy in the competitive aviation market.

IndiGo currently operates a fleet of 368 aircraft, which includes a mix of Airbus and ATR models. This includes thirty-two A320-200s (with twelve on wet lease), 192 A320-200Ns, ninety-four A321-200NXs, three A321-200(P2F)s, forty-five ATR72-600s, and two wet-leased Boeing 777-300ERs.

In addition to this recent firm order, IndiGo announced a staggering order for another 500 aircraft in June 2023, bringing its total Airbus orderbook to 941 aircraft. This extensive lineup comprises various models such as the A320-200Ns, A321-200Ns, A321-200NXs, and A321-200NY(XLR)s, with additional ATR72-600s expected from ATR – Avions de Transport Régional.

Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, speaking at the Asia Aviation Festival in Singapore, emphasized the significance of these orders as critical assets in the airline’s growth strategy. Elbers shared that IndiGo plans to double its size by the end of the decade, supported by an orderbook that schedules the delivery of one aircraft every week for the next ten years. He confidently noted, “The demand in India will not slow down. It will continue to keep growing,” underlining the airline’s optimistic outlook for the future of aviation in India.
