IndiGo Considers Major Purchase of 100 Regional Aircraft Amid Expansion Efforts
IndiGo Airlines is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire approximately 100 regional aircraft, according to sources cited by India’s Economic Times. This potential acquisition positions ATR – Avions de Transport Régional as the front-runner in a competitive selection process that also includes Airbus and Embraer.
The sources suggest that IndiGo favors ATR due to its existing operational experience with the ATR72-600 model, which aligns with its strategy to optimize economies of scale. Despite this preference, the airline is also evaluating the Airbus A220 and the Embraer E175 as possible additions to its regional fleet. The anticipated deal is expected to comprise a balanced mix of firm orders and options, potentially splitting 50/50.
Currently, IndiGo operates a fleet of forty-five ATR72-600s primarily on regional routes across India and has an additional five of the type on order. This move to expand its regional aircraft fleet underscores IndiGo’s dominant position in the Indian domestic market, where it holds approximately 60% market share. However, the airline has not yet finalized any decisions regarding this significant order.
The acquisition would significantly augment IndiGo Airlines’ already substantial order backlog, which stands at 984 aircraft, according to data from ch-aviation. This backlog includes a diverse mix of Airbus models, ranging from the A320-200s to the A350-900s, highlighting IndiGo’s commitment to fleet modernization and expansion to meet growing passenger demand.
Operating a current fleet of 354 aircraft, IndiGo services 118 destinations across 23 countries, demonstrating its extensive operational reach. This planned fleet expansion through the addition of 100 regional aircraft will enable IndiGo to further solidify its market leadership in India and enhance its service offerings on shorter regional routes.
The potential fleet expansion is a strategic move by IndiGo to capitalize on regional travel growth and improve connectivity across its network, ensuring the airline remains competitive in the fast-evolving aviation market.
