IndiGo Expands International Network With 10 New Routes

IndiGo is moving ahead with an ambitious global expansion plan, unveiling service to 10 new international destinations including key long-haul routes to Europe. India’s largest airline by market share will begin nonstop flights from Mumbai to Manchester on July 1, followed by a Mumbai-Amsterdam route on July 2. Both flights will operate three times weekly and be operated with Boeing 787 aircraft damp-leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. This marks IndiGo’s first foray into Western Europe, with plans to further expand service to London and Copenhagen later in the year, and Athens within the next 12 months. These routes will be supported by additional 787s and the anticipated introduction of Airbus A321XLRs into its fleet.

CEO Pieter Elbers described the new routes as a major step in IndiGo’s international growth strategy, which targets underserved markets and strengthens India’s connectivity to Europe and Asia. Entry into the India-London market will position IndiGo against heavyweights like Air India, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic, while the Copenhagen and Athens routes will diversify the airline’s European offering. The India-Athens sector, notably, has no current nonstop competition, giving IndiGo a strategic edge.

In Central Asia, the carrier will resume previously suspended routes from Mumbai to Almaty and Tashkent, both halted due to Pakistan’s airspace closures. It also plans to introduce service to four new Central Asian destinations, including expanded flights to Tbilisi from Mumbai. Southeast Asia will see further growth, with new flights to Siem Reap in Cambodia, as well as increased frequencies to Denpasar in Indonesia and to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam.

On the domestic front, IndiGo’s network is expected to grow from 91 to 95 destinations. The airline is preparing to become the first operator at two upcoming greenfield airports: Navi Mumbai International Airport and Noida International Airport in Jewar. It will also launch flights from Adampur Airport in Jalandhar starting July 1, and from Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad in the near future.

These expansion plans follow a strong financial showing for IndiGo. The airline posted a record net profit of INR30.7 billion ($359 million) in the fourth fiscal quarter ending March 31, with full-year net earnings reaching INR72.6 billion. This performance was underpinned by a 21 percent year-over-year capacity increase. IndiGo has also made headway in resolving its aircraft availability issues, with the number of grounded aircraft due to engine shortages falling to the mid-40s from a peak of over 70 in 2024.

The combination of strategic international growth, improved aircraft availability, and record profitability positions IndiGo as a rising global player ready to challenge established competitors in both established and emerging markets.
