IndiGo Explores Business Class Offering on Select A321neo Aircraft
In a potential departure from its traditional low-cost carrier model, IndiGo Airlines is reportedly considering the introduction of business-class cabins on some of its A321neo aircraft. According to The Economic Times, the airline is contemplating installing 16 business-class seats in each of 35 A321neo aircraft by the end of 2024.
As per insider information, the proposed configuration would feature four rows of extra-legroom seating, providing passengers with a spacious 36 inches of legroom for enhanced comfort and productivity. This move signifies a shift in strategy for IndiGo, which has thrived as India’s largest airline with a focus on a no-frills, low-cost approach.
While the airline has not officially commented on the reports, industry insiders speculate that this potential shift could be influenced by the recent revamp of Air India and a broader trend toward premium travel options in the Indian market.
“The airline believes that there is a section of high-end leisure travelers and small business owners looking for a business-class product at fares lower than those charged by legacy airlines,” the source claimed, highlighting the perceived demand for a more premium offering in the Indian aviation landscape.
IndiGo’s current fleet comprises 342 aircraft, predominantly A320 and A320neo types, with a notable presence of ninety-four A321-200NXs. The airline has an extensive order book of 942 aircraft, including 677 A321neo variants, encompassing 384 A321-200Ns, 224 A321-200NXs, and sixty-nine A321-200XLRs.
While the specific A321neo variant for the business-class configuration was not disclosed, the long-range A321-200NY(XLR)s are potential contenders, targeting markets with flying times of seven hours or more. Airbus is set to commence deliveries of this extended-range variant to IndiGo in 2025, providing additional flexibility for the airline’s evolving business strategy. IndiGo has yet to officially confirm or comment on these reported developments.
