IndiGo Eyes Boost in Fleet with Damp Lease of Qatar Airways Boeing 737-8s Amid Engine Woes

IndiGo Airlines, India’s leading low-cost carrier, is reportedly on the verge of enhancing its fleet through a strategic damp lease agreement with Qatar Airways, involving five Boeing B737-8 aircraft. This move comes as a response to the ongoing challenges IndiGo faces with its Airbus A320neo aircraft, which have been significantly impacted by Pratt & Whitney engine issues, leading to the grounding of 75 planes.

According to details from India’s Economic Times, IndiGo plans to integrate the B737-8s from Qatar Airways into its operations for the IATA summer season on a six-month damp lease basis. This arrangement will see Qatar Airways providing the aircraft, pilots, and maintenance services, while IndiGo will supply the cabin crew, specifically for flights between India and Qatar.

The damp lease initiative marks a notable shift for IndiGo, which predominantly operates Airbus and ATR aircraft, aside from two Boeing 777-300ERs leased from Turkish Airlines under a similar arrangement. The decision to engage in a damp lease with Qatar Airways underscores IndiGo’s commitment to maintaining operational continuity and addressing capacity needs amid its current fleet constraints.

IndiGo’s fleet, excluding aircraft leased from SmartLynx and Turkish Airlines, totals 347 aircraft, featuring a mix of Airbus A320, A321 variants, and ATR72-600s. The airline also boasts an extensive order book, signaling its ambitious growth plans despite current operational hurdles.

Qatar Airways, with a diverse fleet that includes nine active B737-8s, stands as an ideal partner for IndiGo in this venture. The selected aircraft for the lease, all of which are four years old or younger, align with IndiGo’s preference for newer, more reliable aircraft to avoid potential maintenance issues and ensure service reliability.
