IndiGo in Advanced Talks with Boeing for Acquisition of 25 Wide-Body 787 Aircraft

IndiGo, India’s biggest airline, is in advanced talks with Boeing to buy around 25 wide-body aircraft for its international expansion plans, according to industry sources. The low-cost carrier is reportedly leaning towards ordering the Boeing 787 family of twin-aisle jets, which compete with Airbus’ A330neo planes. The deal could be worth more than $6 billion at list prices.

IndiGo has been growing rapidly in the domestic market, where it has a 58% share, and has also launched new routes to Africa and Asia-Pacific. The airline has partnered with several airlines in Europe, including Turkish Airlines, which has leased a Boeing 777 to IndiGo for its long-haul operations. However, IndiGo needs its own wide-body fleet to meet the rising demand for travel within and outside India.

The sources, who requested anonymity as the negotiations are confidential, said that no final decision has been made yet and that IndiGo is still in discussions with both Boeing and Airbus. IndiGo declined to comment on the matter, while Boeing and Airbus did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

IndiGo has previously ordered more than 1,000 narrow-body aircraft from Airbus, including a record-breaking deal for 500 A320neo jets in 2023. The airline aims to double its capacity by the end of the decade and offer more destinations and frequencies to its customers.
