IndiGo to Launch Business Class in Mid-November 2024
IndiGo Airlines is set to shift from its traditional low-cost model with the introduction of business class seats later this year. Starting in mid-November, the airline will debut recliner-style business class on select aircraft, initially focusing on high-demand routes such as Mumbai International-Delhi. By the end of 2025, IndiGo plans to expand its premium offering to 12 routes, including key cities like Bengaluru International, Chennai, Hyderabad International, and Kolkata.
CEO Pieter Elbers announced the move, stating, “IndiGo is embarking on a new path in our remarkable growth story by launching a bespoke business product on the nation’s busiest and most business-centric routes.” He highlighted that India’s growing economy and the evolving aspirations of its society have prompted IndiGo to redefine the business class experience in the country.
According to ch-aviation data, IndiGo holds a dominant 61.71% share of the domestic market based on weekly seat capacity. Its closest rival, Air India, holds 11.7% of the market. Elbers’ strategic move to introduce business class is seen as a response to Air India’s significant investment in fleet upgrades and inflight product enhancements. This expansion also aims to capitalize on the rising affluence in India and the increasing demand for premium travel experiences.
IndiGo will retrofit approximately 40 of its A321neo aircraft with the new business class seats. The airline currently operates 101 A321-200NX aircraft and has an additional 676 A321neo aircraft on order, including various configurations such as 390 A321-200Ns, 217 A321-200NX, and 69 A321-200NY(XLR)s. This fleet expansion supports IndiGo’s strategy to offer a premium cabin while maintaining its position as a leader in India’s competitive aviation market.
