IndiGo to Launch Flights from Navi Mumbai Airport

IndiGo will become the first airline to launch commercial services from the new Navi Mumbai International Airport, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation growth story. Developed by Adani Airports, which also manages Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the upcoming Navi Mumbai hub is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually in its first phase, eventually reaching a capacity of 90 million by 2036.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers confirmed the airline’s role as the launch partner, stating that this collaboration signals complete operational readiness from both the airline and the airport operator. The low-cost carrier plans to start with flights to more than 15 domestic destinations and gradually expand its schedule to include 79 daily departures, 14 of which will be international, by November 2025. By March 2026, the airline expects to cross 100 daily departures, scaling to 140 by November 2026, including 30 international flights.
Elbers emphasized that the expansion aligns with IndiGo’s strategy to serve India’s growing middle class and support the country’s rapidly developing aviation sector. For Adani Airport Holdings, this partnership represents a foundational step in positioning Navi Mumbai as a major domestic and international transfer hub that will ease congestion at Mumbai’s current primary airport.
The new Navi Mumbai airport is part of a broader shift in India’s air transport infrastructure toward dual-airport systems in major metro areas. Alongside the upcoming Noida International Airport serving Delhi, Navi Mumbai is expected to alleviate pressure on overburdened terminals and offer additional capacity for growth.
Construction on Navi Mumbai International Airport began in August 2021, with more than $2 billion invested in the project. While the official opening date has yet to be finalized, the Airports Authority of India has issued a NOTAM indicating that commercial operations are not expected to begin before August 6. At the Routes Asia 2025 conference, COO Prabhat Mahapatra said the airport hopes to be operational by early August.
IndiGo’s plans at Navi Mumbai coincide with its push into long-haul markets. The airline is preparing to launch its first Western European routes, including thrice-weekly services from Mumbai to Manchester starting July 1 and to Amsterdam starting July 2. These flights will use Boeing 787 aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic Airways.
The airline is also enjoying a strong financial performance. IndiGo reported a record net profit of INR30.7 billion ($358.6 million) for its fiscal fourth quarter ending March 31. However, its full-year net profit of INR72.6 billion reflected an 11.2 percent decline year-on-year, partly due to rising operational costs and capacity investments.
With its strategic expansion at Navi Mumbai and entry into new international markets, IndiGo continues to position itself as a leader in India’s dynamic and competitive aviation landscape.
