IndiGo to Wet-Lease Six Boeing 787-9s in 2025
IndiGo Airlines plans to wet-lease six Boeing 787-9s from Norse Atlantic Airways in 2025, marking a strategic move to enter the long-haul market. According to The Economic Times, the first two aircraft will join IndiGo’s operations in February 2025, with the remaining four expected in September. Potential destinations include London and Paris, as IndiGo aims to expand its network to Europe.
Currently, IndiGo does not operate any in-house widebody aircraft. Its only long-haul services rely on two Boeing 777-300ERs wet-leased from Turkish Airlines, operating routes to Istanbul from Mumbai and Delhi.
Norse Atlantic Airways recently announced plans to wet-lease six Boeing 787-9s to an unnamed international airline, aligning with its strategy to increase ACMI contract revenues. The Norwegian carrier’s fleet includes 12 Boeing 787-9s across its Norwegian and UK AOCs.
This wet-lease arrangement has been facilitated by India’s relaxed ACMI regulations, aimed at supporting the expansion of domestic airlines amid global aircraft supply constraints.
In a parallel development, IndiGo is negotiating with Airbus to expedite the delivery of its A350-900s. Initially slated for 2027, the airline is pushing for earlier deliveries to bolster its long-haul capabilities. IndiGo has placed orders for 30 A350-900s, signaling its ambition to compete in the international market.
These developments underscore IndiGo’s commitment to transforming into a global airline, leveraging widebody aircraft to enhance its market presence and connectivity.
