Isla Air Express, a new Spanish airline based in Palma de Mallorca, is preparing to commence commercial seaplane operations in the coming months. Supported by German investors and operating under the Maltese Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from its sister company, Mediterranean Coastal Airlines, Isla Air Express aims to enhance inter-island connectivity across the Balearic Islands with its fleet of De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter seaplanes.

The airline’s co-founder, Klaus Martin, has previous experience in the seaplane industry, having co-owned European Coastal Airlines in Croatia. Isla Air Express will debut its first aircraft, registered as 9H-PALMA, on its inaugural route between Palma Harbor and Ibiza Town. This particular aircraft, which has been in service since 1978, recently completed demonstration and crew training flights, including a notable 35-minute test flight from Palma to Ibiza on November 6, 2024. These preliminary flights are crucial for evaluating suitable landing and take-off zones as the airline seeks to finalize its operational permits from the Balearic Islands Port Authority and the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA).

According to the airline’s website, Isla Air Express is staffed by aviation professionals with extensive experience in commercial seaplane operations worldwide. The airline recognizes the Balearic Islands as an ideal location for seaplane services, thanks to the region’s mild climate and surrounding waters, which are conducive to year-round operations. This initiative promises to provide both residents and tourists with a novel transportation option, enriching the tourism sector with a high-quality service.

Once fully operational, Isla Air Express plans to offer frequent flights from Palma to Ibiza, Formentera, and Menorca, along with additional inter-island routes. The airline also intends to operate flights from Palma and Ibiza to Alicante (ALC) and Valencia (VLC) on the Spanish mainland, utilizing the Twin Otter’s retractable wheels to land on traditional runways. Operations are set to run 365 days a year.

In addition to scheduled flights, Isla Air Express plans to offer its Twin Otters for private charters and sightseeing tours around the picturesque Balearic Islands, catering to both leisure travelers and those seeking unique aerial views of the stunning landscapes.
