ITA Airways has received official approval to begin its integration into Star Alliance following a decision by the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board, which unites the CEOs of its 25 member airlines. This development marks a pivotal moment for the Italian carrier as it embarks on a new chapter in its evolution, expanding its global connectivity and enhancing its service offerings. The integration process, which has already commenced with the Lufthansa Group, now moves at full throttle as ITA Airways prepares to join the world’s largest airline alliance.

In February 2025, ITA Airways initiated its integration with the Lufthansa Group, revealing detailed plans for incorporating the newly acquired airline into the global operations of one of Europe’s leading aviation groups. As part of this strategic alignment, Lufthansa Group recently announced that beginning in the summer of 2025, all ITA Airways flights operating at Frankfurt and Munich airports will be managed from Lufthansa terminals. This move is expected to create a seamless travel experience for passengers and further cement the ties between ITA Airways and one of the most influential airline networks in the world.

On April 2, 2025, ITA Airways officially announced that the completion of its integration process would pave the way for its entry into Star Alliance. The carrier’s onboarding into the alliance is seen as a critical step in strengthening its global network, with plans to introduce 360 daily flights to the alliance network. This expansion is set to boost connectivity not only for international travelers but also for passengers within Italy, particularly from its key hubs in Rome and Milan. These cities already enjoy extensive connectivity, with 16 Star Alliance members providing flights that link Italy with destinations around the world.

Theo Panagiotoulias, the CEO of Star Alliance, confirmed that ITA Airways is expected to officially join as a full member in early 2026. He highlighted that the decision reflects the strong confidence that alliance members have in the potential and performance of ITA Airways. “As a gateway for Italy, its addition strengthens our global network,” Panagiotoulias noted, emphasizing that the move will enhance the reach of Star Alliance, now comprising 26 member airlines offering more than 18,000 daily flights across 192 countries. ITA Airways will be the fifth hub airline of the Lufthansa Group to join the alliance, adding significant value to the overall network and offering increased benefits for travelers.

Joerg Eberhart, the CEO and General Manager of ITA Airways, expressed his enthusiasm about the future. He stated that the airline looks forward to offering its customers the privileges and extensive connectivity of the world’s largest airline network. Eberhart underscored the importance of this integration in creating a more cohesive and comprehensive travel experience for passengers, while also highlighting the operational and strategic advantages that come from being part of Star Alliance.

As ITA Airways moves forward with its integration, industry analysts are watching closely, noting that the move will not only enhance the airline’s competitiveness in the global market but also boost overall travel options for passengers connecting through its network. The decision reinforces ITA Airways’ commitment to modernizing its fleet and expanding its reach, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of innovation and customer service in an increasingly competitive aviation landscape.
