ITA Airways Plans Long-Haul Growth Through 2030

ITA Airways is planning to expand its long-haul network under a new five-year business strategy that runs through 2030. The Italian flag carrier aims to add routes from Rome Fiumicino to key destinations across North America, South America, Asia, and Africa, supported by a growing short-haul feeder network.
To support this expansion, ITA Airways will add one new widebody aircraft annually starting in 2026. By 2030, the airline expects its fleet—averaging 100 aircraft—to consist entirely of new-generation models. ITA’s current fleet includes 100 aircraft, with 18 inactive. Of these, 32 are older-generation types, which the carrier plans to retire as new deliveries arrive.
According to ch-aviation, the fleet includes A220s, A320s, A321neo, A330-900s, and A350-900s. Incoming deliveries include A220-300s, A320neo, A321neo, A330-900s, and A350-900s, allowing the phase-out of A320ceo and A330ceo aircraft.
ITA Airways is considering new U.S. routes to United Airlines hubs at New York Newark and Houston Intercontinental, and plans to deepen ties with Aerolíneas Argentinas on the Buenos Aires route. In Asia, potential destinations include Mumbai, Singapore, and Osaka—aligned with Star Alliance members Air India, Singapore Airlines, and ANA.
The airline is also exploring African routes to Lagos and Abidjan, expanding its current services to Cairo, Tunis, Algiers, Accra, and Dakar—all served with narrowbody aircraft.
ITA Airways is preparing to join Star Alliance in 2026 and enter the transatlantic A++ joint venture with Lufthansa, United Airlines, and Air Canada to enhance its global competitiveness and connectivity.
